Henri-Georges Clouzot Box Set
|
Henri-Georges Clouzot enjoyed a 40-year career in films in his native France, and saw his reputation rise and fall amid the changing tastes of audiences and critics, at home and internationally. Acclaimed in particular for his thrillers, Clouzot was one of the genuine rivals to Alfred Hitchcock and, at his peak, seemed to anticipate the moves of the better-known English director.
Blacklisted for his daring "anti-French" masterpiece, Le Corbeau, Henri-Georges Clouzot returned to cinema four years later with the provocative 1947 crime fiction adaptation, Quai des Orfevres.
Quai des Orfevres (1947): Classic moody Film-Noir.
Le Corbeau (1943): An anonymous series of poison-pen letters spread suspicion and fear amongst the population of a small French town. The author of the letters, who signs himself "The Raven," has enough defamatory information to provoke tension and suicide...
Wages of Fear (1952): The one where a bunch of desperate truck drivers are paid to transport nitro-glycerin over challenging terrain. The Wages of Fear established the writer-director internationally after carrying off major prizes at the Cannes and Berlin film festivals. One of the most suspenseful films ever made.
